Finding products to sell on Shopify can be pretty daunting.

There are hundreds of articles that claim to know the ‘Top’ products to sell that season…

… and don’t even get me started on trying to navigate through the countless products on AliExpress.

When you FINALLY find a product that MIGHT have potential, you begin to worry about silly things like:

  • Market Saturation
  • Consumer Interest
  • Competition

While these are all important aspects to consider, it shouldn’t send every single store owner into a paralyzed standstill.

You end up wasting more time worrying when you should be making money.

So, to help you get things moving…

I’ve put together a set of SMART tips to help you choose winning products. Every. Single. Time.

I’m going to show you how you can use free online resources like holiday gift guides, Pinterest, and Etsy to find profitable products to sell on your Shopify store!

We’re also going to check out the #1 product research tool every Shopify store owner should be using to create a successful business.

It doesn’t matter if your store is brand-spankin’-new or if you’re just phasing in new products – this guide will shave off hours of research and erase any feelings of doubt!

But first… let’s cover the basics.

Product Research Foundations

Keep these 3 concepts in mind anytime you’re looking for products or ideas.

1. Avoid anything trademarked

Write the following down, “I won’t sell anything that’s trademarked.”

Ok, now put it right next to your computer, somewhere easy to see.

A trademark is a legal property right that protects well-known brands and designs from being used and sold by unauthorized resellers.

For example, The Avengers.

Don’t do it.

Don’t even click to look at the product listing on AliExpress.

Being a small business owner doesn’t give you impunity from trademark laws.

2. Consider the potential market size

There’s no point in selling a product that nobody will buy.

Google Trends is a free online tool that helps you determine the relative population size of particular interests.

Results are generated in the form of a line graph that shows you the popularity of a product or niche in real time.

It also narrows down the results by the location of searches, so you can also use it to help with your ad targeting.

3. Calculate profit margins

It’s no secret that a downside to dropshipping is the low profit margins.

If you choose products that you can mark up competitively at higher price-points, then you’ll be set.

Examples of products with larger profit margins include:

  • Jewelry
  • Sunglasses
  • Beauty Products
  • Candles

There are many more products you could sell with higher margins, all it takes is a simple Google search!

Alright, we’ve covered the basics…

…Let’s get to the resources you can use for idea inspiration.

Free Online Tools for Product Idea Inspiration

Holiday Gift Guides

The good thing about gift guides is they never go out of style.

no matter what holiday they’re framed around.

Ok, so maybe one from 1995 is a little outdated …

But last Christmas’s products are still in style!

If you want to stay on top of the game, you can use this holiday calendar we use for our stores.

But all it takes is a simple Google search of:

“Holiday” + gift guide (year)

And there ya have it, a valuable collection of highly sought-after products that you can dropship!

Are Apple’s Airpods still at the top of almost every list?

No problem!

AliExpress has their very own that seems oddly familiar to some that Urban Outfitters is selling 😉

If that’s not proof of a product with potential… I don’t know what is.

It just goes to show that you don’t need a well known branded name to sell highly-coveted products!

So don’t feel defeated if the only products in gift guide are brand-names, AliExpress will always have a comparable product that people will pay for.

Etsy’s “Popular Right Now” Drop-down

Your next reservoir of highly-sought after products is located on Etsy.

You can easily discover what people are searching for in real-time by simply using their search bar at the top of the page.

Just click within the search bar …

… and voila!

Etsy generates a dropdown of popular products users are currently searching for on their site!

Simple as that!

Pinterest

So maybe you don’t dropship, or source products from AliExpress…

Don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you!

Pinterest is your all-in-one social proof and custom print on demand design hoard that shows tons of engagement!

Now, you can’t just go and copy someone else’s design for products to sell on your store, but what you CAN DO is see what types of designs get the most pins – which is Pinterest’s way of showing user ‘likes’ and total engagement.

All you have to do is type your “niche” + designs in the search bar…

… And then Pinterest will pull in all types of products and designs targeted by that niche.

For example: “dog necklace”

Notice this design has 700 pins!

And that’s only checking the SECOND ROW of results…

… It does get a little daunting having to sift through image after image…

… but it does offer a great resource for product and design validation.

The 1 Tool to Guarantee a Winning Product That WILL Sell…

Now the three free resources I just went over will only show you products people are searching for or products that have high engagement…

Which only really points you in the right direction – they dont provide a foolproof framework for finding a product or product line that’s GUARANTEED TO SELL.

In fact, none of the resources I provided will give you the reliable, concrete answers you need to turn your online store into a business.

Sure, you’ll be able to see what products are trending…

…but how do you know which of those products to choose from?

Do any of them tell you how many orders have been placed?

Or if it’s the best selling item on any Shopify store?

Don’t take the risk of guessing, make an informed decision based off of data, which is exactly what Cookie.io can provide you with.

Cookie.io: The Data-Driven Tool That Will Deliver Profitable, Winning Products Straight to Your Store

The strategies I shared above are the same strategies that we’ve used for our own eCommerce stores – both dropshipping and print on demand…

… But then we noticed HOW MUCH TIME we were spending trying to validate products without any concrete evidence of selling potential…

… and that’s how Cookie.io was created.

A few Shopify store owners got together to create a tool that would spare more time to focus on SCALING a business instead of spending hours on weak product research.

Instead of:

  • Sorting through hundreds of products
  • Comparing specs to the very last detail
  • Measuring seller rating based only off of what a website could tell us

We created an app that would load products based on certain metrics we set such as:

  • Amount of orders
  • Seller Rating
  • Engagement

In addition to showing you popular products on various platforms (like Etsy), Cookie.io also provides you with in-depth training that lets you harness the same strategies we used to grow our online stores to $10,000 a month AND weekly interactive workshops from industry leading experts.

But before I get into the brevity of Cookie.io’s total functionality, let me show you how you can use the free resources mentioned above alongside our proprietary software to cut your product research time in half.

Etsy Product Search

The Etsy Product Search tool allows you to see products that people are BUYING RIGHT NOW just from a simple keyword search!

Once the results have populated, you can filter them by:

  • Number of favorites
  • Views per product
  • Time frame

This tool gives you a complete insight into what people are buying RIGHT NOW, allowing you to stay on top of current trends that shoppers WANT to buy.

Pinterest Searcher

Remember how I mentioned that sifting through every single Pinterest post to check the engagement was daunting?

Well, it doesn’t have to be.

In the Pinterest search tool, all you have to do is type in the “niche” + product that you’re looking for and the items with the highest engagement and pins will automatically load in the results!

You can narrow down results by the number of times a post has been saved, as well as the time frame that it’s been saved in, so you only view the most recent and current designs and products out there.

Just check out the dog necklace populated by Cookie.io

Clearly, 2,000 pins exceed the 700 pins in just a quick 30-second search, which gives more time to brainstorm your own designs instead of search for ideas from others.

Reveal Top Sellers

Have you ever wondered what successful eCommerce stores are actually selling?

Like, the real Best Sellers?

Us too, which is why we created the Top Seller Reveal tool – the tool that exposes the top-selling products within ANY Shopify store.

… but you can use it to compete for pricing, supercharge your product descriptions, or find a similar rival product that solves more consumer pain points.

All you need is a Shopify URL.

Don’t know any profitable Shopify stores off the top of your head?

No prob.

AliExpress Searcher

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt threatened by the number of products on AliExpress.

Even by the number of similar products sold by different suppliers with no distinguishable differences…

Me too.

Our AliExpress Search tool is the bread and butter of Cookie.io

It lets you filter through the useless products and reveals products that will sell based on metrics such as ratings and number of orders – which are the two top indicators of a products selling potential.

Let me show you how this tool alone with start making you sales the moment you start using it:

We’re going to use the dog necklace Pinterest example for two reasons:

  • It had lots of engagement
  • Jewelry provides high profit margins

1. First and foremost, open up the AliExpress Searcher tool in Cookie.io

2. Enter a simple keyword into the search field

  • I chose “dog necklace”

3. We’re looking for products that are proven to sell, so set the minimum order field to 1000

  • This will vary by product and niche, well-known niches will have higher minimum order thresholds.

4. Hit “Search”…

And there you have it!

The very first result is a paw print necklace that has had 3,242 orders!

Not to mention, it’s only $0.80 per unit, which could easily be resold at $25.00 minimum.

You can even further your research by comparing prices to other suppliers and viewing the item on other Shopify stores that are selling this product!

Flipping NUTS, right?

You can then use our Reveal Top Sellers tool to see what the stores top sellers are.

Everything within Cookie.io works together to provide thorough product validation process.
